HELLO VENUS Girl Group Debut

Home to After School, Son Dambi and their latest boy bad N'uest, Pledis Entertainment has followed up with their newest girl group "Hello Venus." As astronomy never goes out of style, Hello Venus seems to be a catchy name for a group that resembles what their names suggest. The members look like they walked out of the widely popular manga-turned-anime series Sailor Moon, with their long slender legs, distinctive hairstyles, and large bow accessories. Like the rest of their female label-mates, the new Pledis members are all respectively tall- with heights from 165-172cm (5'5-5'7ish). With tapered waists and willowy forms, the girls look suited for their album photo concept as fairy-woodland creatures. Their debut song, "Venus" is a cute and addictive tune that you'll sing along to without noticing. It's an early morning kind of song- the kind you use to welcome a cheery new spring. The track is about an interested girl cheering a guy on so he can confess to her. I find myself particularly hooked with the track- it reminds me of cooler times in the approaching heat of summer.

Netizens have commented on the lack of originality from this group's debut. They refer to the "Venus" music video, in which the bright lighting, clothing concept and bubble-gum pop song resemble many other girl group music videos. I understand their concern here, that Pledis Entertainment is not putting originality into the debut of this new band. Though I'm sure the members will show different concepts and talents in the future, I almost wish that they didn't just dye one member's hair blue- wouldn't the girls be much more noticeable if they all started out with cotton candy hair colors? Even if they were just wigs?

Is this girl group formidable? So far, it's too soon to see, but their live performance for "Venus" is actually quite good. What I didn't expect was for the rapper to also sing the high notes of a main vocalist. Listen to the Mr. Removed version here:
